Six articles on the responsibilities of those who build intelligent systems for a connected civilization.
Article I
Truth Matters.
An institution that loses its commitment to truth loses the basis of its usefulness. A system that obscures its reasoning forfeits the right to be relied upon.
We hold that the truth, plainly stated and patiently revised, is the only foundation on which durable intelligence can be built.
Article II
Complexity Requires Understanding.
Complexity cannot be managed by force or by metaphor. It is met by attention — by the steady practice of representing systems as they are, not as we wish them to be.
Our instruments exist to extend that attention across scales, across time, and across the boundaries of any single discipline.
Article III
Technology Must Serve Humanity.
Technology is not the protagonist. It is the means by which a society — its people, its institutions, its inheritance — pursues a flourishing future.
We build with this orientation in mind: a tool is judged by whether it enlarges human capability and human dignity.
Article IV
Intelligence Should Empower.
Intelligence that displaces judgment is a poor substitute for intelligence that strengthens it.
The systems we make are designed to make people more capable — more discerning, more informed, more responsible — not less.
Article V
Civilizations Advance Through Knowledge.
Knowledge, accumulated and transmitted, is the substrate of every advance worth keeping. Civilizations endure to the extent that they care for what they have learned.
We treat the network of ideas across people and time as a primary object of design.
Article VI
Trust Is the Foundation.
Without trust, intelligence is unusable. With it, ordinary tools can become extraordinary.
Earning trust is slow work — the patient accumulation of evidence, honest practice, and visible accountability. We accept this as the cost of doing serious work.
